The concept of a 'Garden Coach' has been around for ages.  Many gardeners have been fortunate to have a more experienced gardener in their lives who is able to offer objective advice and also act as a mentor, sounding board or fellow plant-junkie.

But not every gardener is so lucky - until now.  Roberts & Roberts offers 'house-calls' or coaching sessions right in your garden where we help you tackle any garden or landscape design issue you may have.

Garden Coaching FAQs

What is a Garden Coach?

A Garden Coach teaches homeowners how to nurture and maintain their gardens.  A good Garden Coach has experience and expertise in a variety of gardening areas and is able to convey that knowledge to their clients in a very hands-on manner.
A Garden Coach will work alongside you demonstrating proper techniques for tasks ranging from the appropriate way to prune trees and shrubs to the correct method to use when transplanting perennials and shrubs.  Here at Roberts & Roberts, we like to say ‘We Grow Gardeners’ because our goal is to share our knowledge and empower you to be a better gardener.
Who is your typical client?

Garden Coaching clients range from new homeowners who have never maintained a garden before to highly skilled gardeners who are looking for ideas from a professional to help take their garden to the next level.  Regardless of their initial skill level, all our Garden Coaching clients have one thing in common – they really want to care for their own gardens, they just need a little help now and then.

My landscaper knows a lot about my garden, why should I work with a Garden Coach?
Garden Coaches bring a wealth of specialized knowledge to their clients that the typical landscaper may not.  Many Garden Coaches are also professional landscape designers or master gardeners and therefore can offer you a different set of skills and expertise.
How many coaching sessions will I need?
The number of Garden Coaching sessions needed is entirely up to you and the type of issue you would like help with.  For example, a homeowner who has purchased a new home and needs help not only identifying all the trees, shrubs and perennials growing in their new garden but also learning about their specific maintenance routines may only need one in-depth session.
On the other hand, let’s say you’re interested in adding a new bed or border to your existing garden.  In that case, you may want several sessions with a Garden Coach.  During the first session, your Garden Coach may help you lay out the line of the new border and show you the most efficient methods to use to get the border ready for planting.  Once the bed is ready for planting, your Garden Coach will come back again to discuss the pros and cons of different plant choices for your new border based on your goals and will help you compile a ‘shopping list’ complete with size and quantity of each plant you will need.  Your Garden Coach can even help you shop for plants and place them properly in your new border so all the guess work is taken out before the installation.
How is a Garden Coach typically paid?
Most Garden Coaches are paid on an hourly basis.  Because time spent in the garden can pass so quickly, when you work with a Garden Coach at Roberts & Roberts, you will be sent a short survey to fill out and return before the first coaching session.   The survey helps us understand more about you, your garden and your goals for working with us.  This enables us to come to the coaching session prepared and ready to hit the ground running.
Should I take notes during our session?
Whether or not you take notes is entirely up to you.  You will definitely learn a wealth of information during these hands-on Garden Coaching sessions and some clients take notes to make sure they can do tasks correctly on their own when the Garden Coach is not standing right next to them.  However, other clients prefer to purchase a customized plant ID and maintenance guide from Roberts & Roberts for their future use.  You can decide which option is best for you.
